Sealant

Sealant

The dental sealant is a thin layer of plastic applied to the chewing surfaces of teeth, primarily on molars and premolars, to prevent cavities. This treatment is applied only to existing teeth that have not been previously treated, meaning they do not have fillings.

This special product quickly bonds to the grooves and pits of the teeth, forming a protective barrier over the enamel of each tooth. Although brushing and cleaning teeth with dental floss can remove food particles and debris from smooth surfaces, they do not always clean all the corners and crevices of the back teeth. Sealants protect these vulnerable areas from cavities by “sealing” the spots where food and debris can remain.

  1. First, the teeth to be sealed are thoroughly cleaned.
  2. Each tooth is dried, and cotton or another absorbent material is placed around it to keep it dry.
  3. An acidic solution is applied to the chewing surfaces of the teeth to make them rougher, helping the sealant to bond better.
  4. After that, the teeth are rinsed and dried again.
  5. The sealant is applied to the surface of the tooth, directly bonding with the enamel. At this point, the sealant hardens. Sometimes, a special light is used to assist with the hardening.

The application of the sealant is a simple and painless process, taking only a few minutes to cover each tooth.

Frequently Asked Question

Dental Sealants usually last between 5 to 10 years, depending on the quality of the material and oral hygiene practices. It’s important to have regular dental check-ups to ensure that the sealants are still in good condition and to repair them if necessary. Proper dental care, including brushing and using dental floss, can help extend the lifespan of sealants. In Italy, dental tourism in Albania offers high-quality services for applying dental sealants, with experienced dentists available in specialized dental clinics.
